Big Meadows in the Shenandoah National Park
Lisel Shoffner Powell | E-Mail and Robert Kemmerlin | E-Mail 3-08-2010
Big Meadows, located in the Shenandoah National Park, is one of the best locations on the East coast to find white-tailed deer that are acclimated to humans. The deer allow you to approach within reasonable distances, which is great for photography.
In addition to the numerous deer, Peregrine falcons have been relocated to the park. Almost every day Peregrines falcons were flying over the small field behind the lodge we stayed at. We even watched one take a small bird right out of a tree!
Trillium in the South
Will Stuart | E-Mail | 02-01-10
Trillium may be our most photogenic spring ephemerals. These often-showy wildflowers, in shades of white, pink, yellow, red, and deep maroon, are easily recognized by three large, broad, heavily veined leaves. They emerge from the forest floor in very early spring and immediately produce compact flower buds. They will complete their season's work before the forest canopy can develop and shade the forest floor.
The southeastern states are home to nearly 20 species of Trillium. Each species is unique and several grow only in the southeastern United State.
