Butch Armstrong |
A professional event photographer, Butch expanded his photography experience into the world of natural macros as a way of relaxation. His skill with the small and overlooked is readily recognized by his photography peers. "One of my favorite past times is teaming up with my granddaughter and taking a stroll through 'bug land', as she affectionately refers to the area behind my home. She spots 'em and I capture the image. We are quite the pair." |
Steve Ellwood |
A resident of Murrells Inlet, SC, is a life-long outdoors enthusiast. His career of over 30 years in advertising design and illustration paved the way to his interest in photography. Steve's introduction into digital photography began with a simple point and shoot camera and a refractor telescope. Pointing his telescope skyward at the moon and planets sparked his passion for astrophotography and before long he was capturing long exposure images of deep-sky objects like nebula and galaxies with a DSLR. When daylight arrives Steve spends much of his spare time in pursuit of the local and regional wildlife of the South Carolina Lowcountry. While he enjoys all wildlife, it's birds that are his primary subjects. Steve believes strongly in studying bird behavior, scouting locations and approaching each day out in the field with a plan. |

He also founded Acu-color Photographic Labs serving other professional photographers in the Houston area. He later branched into family and sports photography. After 12 years in Houston, Jim relocated to Washington DC to spend 16 years with the National Geographic Society and magazine in prepress production. Now retired from the magazine, Jim has started Arts N Images, a small home-based photography business serving the Hanover-Gettysburg Pennsylvania area. "Once just a hobby and now a passion, photographing nature has become an integral part of my photography experience. I devote much of my spare time to exploring the outdoors and the flora and fauna that exists in the various areas I visit." - J Flowers |
Joe Kegley |
An outdoor and nature enthusiast, Joe enjoys learning and sharing everything he can about the natural history within the Southeast. Originally from Tennessee, Joe now resides in North Carolina and enjoys studying the various species and habitats between the coastal plain and the Appalachian mountains. "The diversity and availability of wildlife is amazing ... if you know where to look. No matter how much I learn, I will always feel like a beginner. It's amazing what we are blessed with. I want to experience anything and everything." |
Robert Kemmerlin |
With a degree in biology from the University of South Carolina, nature photography was a natural progression for Robert. A former Carolinas' Nature Photography Association officer, Robert brings a wealth of wildlife photography experience to WildlifeSouth. An avid birder and naturalist, Robert understands the fragile natural system that must be balanced with the demands of progress. "There is so much beauty to experience and understand, a lifetime is simply not enough time." |
Scott McWatty |
Scott's love for the wildlife and the outdoors started at a very young age. That love was groomed into what it has become today through his experiences in the Boy Scouts and time in the woods and on the waters as a hunter. His award winning photography has been published in South Carolina Wildlife Magazine and most recently in the 2011 May/June issue of Ducks Unlimited magazine. In his spare time you will find Scott pursuing wildlife, nature, and interesting landscapes from the coast to the cypress swamps and the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina and on into the Appalachians in North Carolina. Being centrally located in Lexington, SC it allows for relatively quick day trips in the field for some shutter time. "Being successful as a wildlife photographer is much like hunting. The more time and effort you put into learning the creatures you set out to photograph the more successful you will be at capturing a magical moment that many folks will never see or experience. The only difference is the weapon, with wildlife and/or nature photography your weapon is the camera and lens." |
Lisel Shoffner Powell |
Currently residing in New Market, MD, Lisel has dabbled in photography since she was a little girl participating in Daddy's hobby, but started her photography habit in earnest when she took her first photography class in high school. An environmental advocate and animal lover from an early age, nature was an obvious draw for her artistic expression. Inspired by the paintings of Georgia O'Keefe, Lisel's early (and still favorite) emphasis was flower photography, but she has broadened her passion to include landscapes and birds. Regardless of the subject, Lisel's approach is to get the shot without impacting the target. For her, the perfect shot is not worth destroying the location or altering the subject's behavior. Her advice for getting the best animal image is to approach very slowly, stay quiet, and try not to look directly at them as you approach; this will minimize your disturbance and increase the chances of the animal staying around. You can see more of Lisel's work by visiting her gallery on the Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association web site - Lisel Shoffner Powell at CNPA. |
